Climate Change Commitment & Action Plan

Introduction

At SPQR Communications, we recognise the urgent need for decisive climate action in line with the latest science and the Paris Agreement. As a London-based communications agency, we may have a relatively small direct environmental footprint, but we believe in leading by example and using our influence to mobilise positive change across our sector and beyond.

Our approach is based on transparency, continuous improvement, and collaboration with our clients, partners, and suppliers. We are committed to making meaningful progress every year and to playing our part in ensuring a sustainable future for all.

1. Our Climate Commitment

SPQR Communications is publicly committed to supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement, namely:

Keeping global temperature rise well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
Reducing emissions by 45% by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050.

This commitment is reflected in our internal policies, our client service ethos, and our communication outputs.

2. Targets and Roadmap

We acknowledge the need for clear targets and a structured roadmap to achieve meaningful decarbonisation.

Net Zero by 2030: We are developing a detailed action plan to achieve net zero across our direct operations by 2030.
Annual Emissions Reporting: From 2025, we will publish an annual carbon emissions report in line with the GHG Protocol, covering energy use, business travel, and digital infrastructure.
Scope 3 Emissions: We are mapping our value chain to measure and manage Scope 3 emissions (including purchased services and supplier emissions), with reporting to begin in 2025.

3. Governance and Continuous Review

Annual Strategy Review: Our sustainability strategy is reviewed annually or in response to significant changes in science or regulation, ensuring we remain ambitious and compliant.
Compliance: We adhere to all relevant UK and EU environmental legislation and keep our internal compliance policies up to date.

4. Emissions Monitoring and Reporting

Scope 1 & 2: We already track our electricity and heating usage, as well as company-controlled travel. Our first comprehensive report is due Q3 2025.
Scope 3: We are building processes to estimate and report emissions from our suppliers, digital platforms, and other indirect sources.

5. Supplier Engagement

We are developing sustainable procurement guidelines to encourage our suppliers to adopt low-carbon practices. Our aim is to favour partners and vendors who share our environmental commitments.

6. Innovation & Operations

Energy: Transitioning to 100% renewable energy in our office by 2026.
IT: Moved to cloud-based, energy-efficient digital solutions.
Travel: Prioritising some remote work and low-carbon travel options.
Waste: Minimising office waste and promoting recycling.

7. Industry Engagement & Collaboration

Industry Initiatives: We are active members of the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) and support their Climate Charter.
External Engagement: We collaborate with sector peers, environmental consultants, and clients to raise standards and share best practice.

8. Risk Assessment and Controls

Risk Assessment: We are currently completing our first climate risk review, covering operational, reputational, and supply chain risks.
Controls: We have implemented a remote work policy, energy efficiency measures, and are introducing new supplier standards to mitigate risks.

9. Ongoing Improvement Plan

Our climate action journey is ongoing. Key next steps include:

Publishing our first annual sustainability report in 2025.
Rolling out sustainable procurement guidelines to all suppliers.
Achieving 100% renewable office energy by 2026.
Launching a staff engagement programme on sustainability.
Continuously reviewing and updating our climate targets in line with the latest science.
